Old English Gallery - Arculus

these pieces are not for sale!

Alfred Arculus were a Birmingham company. Their factory made a range of glass products from the 1880s until it was destroyed by a bomb in 1940. These products included millefiori paperweights and related items such as bottles, bowls and various glasses with paperweight bases. Some of these contained date canes for 1848 at the request of customers! The business was bought by T J Hands in 1920, and later by Walsh Walsh in 1930, but seems to have made paperweights from the early 1900s until the start of the Second World War in 1939. Many Arculus and Walsh Walsh pieces are very similar, but the 'low dome' paperweights, chequers, and ones with rabbit canes were made at the Arculus factory. The quality of their pieces varies considerably.
